Extraction, Characterization and Application of Gelatin fromCarcharhinus amblyrhyncho and Sphyraena barracuda

چکیده
Demand of gelatin for food and pharmaceutical application is increasing because it is one of the most widely used food ingredients. Fish gelatin represents one of the important types of gelatin from other sources other than mammalian gelatins and it may thus be considered as an alternative to mammalian gelatin for use in various food and pharmaceutical applications. The main objective of the study is to extract gelatin from fish skin of Carcharhinus amblyrhyncho (shark) and Sphyraena barracuda (sheela). Gelatin extracted by acid and alkaline treatment and confirmed by gelatinase test and FT-IR analysis. The physico-chemical characters were studied. The skin of shark yielded higher amount of gelatin than the sheela. Similarly protein, turbidity, pH, Gelling and Melting temperature, Foaming properties, Emulsifying properties, colour, amino acid composition of shark gelatin were in better than the sheela.Extracted gelatin was used in the preparation of jelly and thus its application was determined. Therefore, the use of fish skin waste as raw material in the gelatin production is quite potential and plays a major role in recycling of waste.

Larval ecology of the great barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, and other sphyraenids in the Straits of Florida
The great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is a widespread, ecologically and socioeconomically important coastal fish, yet very little is known about its larvae. We examined spawning and larval ecology of Western Atlantic sphyraenids using monthly ichthyoplankton samples collected over 2 years along a transect spanning the east–west axis of the Straits of Florida (SOF). Samples were dominated by...
متن کاملSpatial ecology and residency patterns of adult great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) in coastal waters of The Bahamas
Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) were implanted with acoustic telemetry transmitters (n = 42) and monitored within a stationary acoustic receiver array (n = 53 receivers) in The Bahamas to examine residency, seasonal movements, and habitat use. Barracuda were monitored for up to 980 days and remained within the array area »33% (median value) of the time. Most tagged barracuda were transien...
متن کاملCaribbean ciguatera: a changing paradigm.
Analyses of ciguatoxicity in the great barracuda Sphyraena barracuda and quantity of toxic benthic dinoflagellates on coastal reefs (correlated with the number of cases of human ciguatera intoxications in Puerto Rico) were used to construct a model formulated on data obtained during the period of 1985-1988. The validity of the proposed model has been questioned by recent data obtained during th...
متن کاملNew record of larval Hysterothylacium sp. (Nematoda: Raphidascar-ididae) in pick handle barracuda (Sphyraena jello) ) from the Persian Gulf, Iran
Pick handle barracuda (Sphyraena jello) ) is one of the most important commercial species in the Persian Gulf. In order to investigate prevalence and intensity of nematoda, 150 S. jello from three sites (Khuzestan, Bushehr and Hormozgan provinces) of the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf were monthly investigated in the period 2012-2013. The nematodes belonging to the genus Hysterothylaci...
متن کاملFeeding habits of Pickhandle barracuda; Sphyraena jello Cuvier, 1829; in Chabahar coastal waters (Oman Sea)
The purpose of this study was to explore the feeding habits and preference prey of Sphyraena jello in Chabahar marine waters between April 2019 to March 2020. The number of 385 specimens with mean (±SD) total length and weight 64.0±3.5 cm and 925.45±12.0 g for males and 66.0±2.45 cm and 1001.35±5.2 g for females were examined. Length-weight relationships of male and female was respectively comp...
